This last half of the semester will focus on assignments relating to the final major task: the Un-essay.

An un-essay is an essay, but its purpose is to give students more freedom and creativity, especially with regards to the structure. I will explain the philosophy behind this style of writing over the weeks to come and especially when you start to prepare your Outline for the final un-essay.

For this first set of un-essay assignments, you are going to write a proposal and annotated bibliography so that

a) I have an idea of what you are going to focus on

b) you have more background knowledge to work with for your un-essay.

The Proposal (5%) ; Climate change.

Use four paragraphs to answer the follow questions – note the expected word count for each question:

· Introduce the social issue that you plan to focus on in your un-essay. Present the issue in one sentence and try to be as specific as you can.

· Explain why you want to focus on this issue:

o Why are you personally drawn to this issue? (100 words)

o What do you already know about the issue? (100 words)

o NOTE: Though you have answered these questions in other ways in this course, try not to repeat your answers. You are encouraged to review your previous assignments in preparation for this.

· At this stage, what do you think is the point you want to make about that issue? (50 words)

The Annotated Bibliography (10%)

For this part of your assignment, you will research the topic of the social issue you have chosen to focus on. Your research should include three sources. The criteria for these sources is explained on the next page.

One of your sources must be a text you studied in this course (be it a short story, a film, or article). Going up the mountain  Arrival (2016) film

The other two should be an expository text from any of the sources below:

· The Conversation

· Vox (Vox Explainers, including their videos, can be especially helpful)

 Â· Ted Talks

While you’re encouraged to research these sites extensively, do not use more than one text per source for your annotated bibliography. Also, seek diverse sources. Find texts that have different points of view (including opposite points of view, if possible) on the issue you are examining.

Your annotated bibliography should list three references in APA format.

Compose a 100-150 word paragraph below each of your references, summarizing the main points that particular text has to make about the issue you are studying. Remember: “to summarize” is to use your own words in a concise manner, but if you need to use the original language of that text, then you should quote the key words and provide an APA-style citation to indicate where the language is located (be it the paragraph number or with a time-stamp – and no need to restate the author or year in your citations for each annotation).

The Format

Format your work in APA style:

· Use 12 pt Times New Roman font

· Double-space your writing

· Provide a cover page on the first page of your document

· Number your pages in the header

· List your references in alphabetical order

Present your work according to this sequence:

· Cover page

· Proposal

· Annotated Bibliography

Upload your work as a single .docx file. Include your last name in the file name.
