In chapter seven of the course’s textbook, we explored building capital and the importance of nurses to engage in capital developing. Initially, I thought that the topic was irrelevant to my nursing career but at the end of it, I realized that it was quite remarkable. Indeed, it is necessary to have the voice of a nurse heard in the political arena, build financial capital to be able to engage at higher levels, and shape intellectual and social capital. The three help to establish credibility as an expert while maintaining an intellectual network of supporters (Patton, Zalon & Ludwick, 2014). Chapter eight and nine focus on organization and effective planning. It informs that, it is imperative for a nurse to understand that he/she will work in an organization and hence should cultivate the skills and techniques of navigating the organizational setting to ensure that the one can deliver accordingly. I think that is an excellent piece of advice that is not only relevant to the nursing profession but also others. Chapter ten dealt with being able to work with the media while chapter eleven encompassed applying a nursing lens to shape policy. In essence, the chapters were effective in addressing the objective of the course of ascertaining that nurses were empowered to be effective in their work (Patton, Zalon & Ludwick, 2014).
Potential Applications of the Course Week’s Course Concepts
Potential applications of the four weeks’ course concepts exist. First, the capital building can be used to empower nurses and hence enable them to negotiate for friendly working conditions with entities such as their employers and their respective governments. Secondly, educating nurses on policy-making aids them to be aware of how to understand nursing policies as well as relevant healthcare policies and how the guidelines affect the nursing discipline (Patton, Zalon & Ludwick, 2014). Additionally, a nurse who understands how policies work is in a better position to negotiate for a better deal during policy development than who is not. Lastly, chapter ten touched on how to deal with social media. Indeed, in the contemporary society, instant communication and the social media have become the main methods of communication. Therefore, being able to navigate the social media is a tool that should be learned by nurses to avoid pitfalls.
Successes and Challenges Faced In Terms Of the Course Content
The success that I achieved in the four weeks regarding the course content entails being able to cover all the reading materials. I managed to read and internalize the concepts that were discussed during the period. Additionally, I completed the weeks’ discussions and assignments and learned from the feedback from my instructor and fellow students’ feedback. However, it was challenging to keep up with the reading and at the same time deliver my assignments on time. Indeed, the four weeks was time well spent for various reasons. Foremost, I had a good time learning the mentioned topics, because they contained new concepts that were quite stimulating. Secondly, the readings demystified some of the myths I had, regarding the relevance of some topics to the profession. Lastly, the knowledge that I gained during the period reinforced my desire to pursue nursing.
