Autism has been studied for a long time already but still the etiologic factors relating to the disease are not yet well-established. The public becomes more aware about the presence of such a disorder in society primarily because of its rapidly increasing incidence over the past decades. With the stigma attached to it, we know very little about disorder. More so, the social impact of having a family member affected with the disorder have not been discussed in literature up to date. The author of this paper aims to discuss the comprehensive social impact of autism on society. The drastic effect of stigmatization on the people affected with the disorders and how progressive public awareness helps decrease the negative impact the disease has been tackled in this paper as well.
Early literature has described autism in a context that was focused on the deficit in cognitive functioning. Back in the days, the sociological functioning deficit involved in the disorder was not recognized and therefore no literature has focused on that aspect thoroughly. Autism is described as a developmental disorder that is characterized by deficits in sociologic, communication, and cognitive function ( Liu et al., 2010). It is often associated with repetitive behaviors. Therefore, there is delay and deviance in the development of social skills, language and communication, and behavioral repertoire. Since it affects multiple areas of development, the other aspects of the disorder are neglected primarily because the mental retardation aspect alone has been a major challenge to the clinicians.
As members of a society, the increased incidence of autistic spectrum disorder has a huge impact on its well-being. Each autistic child requires more resources than a normal healthy child. Aside from this, these patients need more time and support from their parents which leads to more challenging parenting.
