Sabaton (Three Parts) *you must complete all three parts to complete the assignment.
*Note: the focus of this assignment will be on song lyrics. Sabaton does have some official videos, but I want you to focus here on the printed work. There are also numerous fan videos, which could be misleading. So, if you find listening to the music so painful it makes you want to cut your hair like the lead vocalist’s, don’t worry, you don’t have to listen to anything. Remember, there are two other options for the Second Half Assignment. J
Part 1 – Analyze Lyrics: What historical events and personalities are referred to in the lyrics?
i) Choose a Sabaton song from the list on page three. All the songs listed are about events or people connected with World War II. There are likely some other WWII Sabaton songs that I missed, but I think the list has most of them. If you wish to use a song that is not on the list, please check with me.
ii) Find the lyrics online and copy them to a Word doc *Be sure to footnote where you obtained the lyrics. Your best bet is the band’s discography page: https://www.sabaton.net/discography/
iii) Analyze the lyrics and make notes in comment bubbles about the people and events in the lyrics. Examples from the song ‘Ghost Division’ are given as an example below.
*I will expect at least seven separate bubbles with notes for the song you have chosen. If you had to research the information, you should footnote where you obtained it. Put the footnote in the bubble. In the case of ‘Ghost Division’, “Panzer” (German for tank) doesn’t need a footnote as that is common knowledge, but the definition of the “Ghost Division” itself does need a footnote. *You cannot choose ‘Ghost Division’ for your song to analyze.
**You will easily find information on the songs on the band’s site, Wikipedia, or fan sites. HOWEVER, I want you to verify any information you get from these and other popular website with more credible sources, such as britannica.com, history.com, books or academic articles that would score at least a 6 on our SES table.
Part 2 – Full Seven Questions Primary Source Analysis with footnotes: Give your chosen song a complete primary source analysis answering the seven primary sources questions (and the related questions under the seven questions). We have considered these questions in relation to the primary sources. Now, you will use them to direct a written analysis of your Sabaton. *See the first page of the ‘Group Presentation and Discussion Evaluation’ handout. Some questions can be answered in a sentence or two; others can, and should, take a full paragraph. Remember to use Chicago style footnotes for any information you obtain and include a bibliography at the end of your seven questions.
Part 3 – Critical Analysis Response: What do you think of your chosen song with respect to learning and remembering the events and people of World War II? Is this a respectful lesson of remembrance, an inappropriate glorification, or does it trivialize war and death? Is it some combination of all three things or something else entirely? Finally, and briefly, what are your impressions of Sabaton in general? (150 – 200 words)
*As always, academic integrity counts. Use your own words and if you use outside information or words, make sure that you footnote using Chicago Style.
Part One Example:
“Ghost Division” by Sabaton Music: Brodén Lyrics: Brodén/Sundström
They are the Panzer elite
Born to compete
Living or dead
Fed by your dread

*As mentioned, as far as I can see, some songs have official videos. Most have fan videos. Ignore the videos and any visual messages. Your focus needs to be on the lyrics of the song you have selected.
