**You will have to buy, rent, or otherwise ‘obtain’ Live by Night and watch it and take notes. I will expect you to make specific references to the film by the time in the film. So, if you wish to do this option, get the film, get some popcorn, have your laptop on a notepad handy and watch it with the assignment in mind.

*As always, academic integrity counts. Use your own words and if you use outside information or words, make sure that you footnote using Chicago Style.

Live by Night is a 2016 film starring Ben Affleck as an American World War I war veteran who becomes a gangster in Boston and Tampa. Set in the 1920s and 1930s, the film captures the history of the era from prohibition to “Jim Crow” to fashion. In this two-part assignment, you will research and analyze two aspects of the film.

Part 1: “Jim Crow” in Live by Night

As you know, “Jim Crow” laws were laws created in the United States from the 1870s onwards that were designed to enforce racial segregation. For Part 1 of the assignment, find three examples of scenes where “Jim Crow” laws are shown or referred to in the film. Describe each scene what sort of law is being depicted. In your discussion, consider what message or statement the film might be making. Identify the scenes you are referring to and indicate the time from the film (for example: 1:20:39—1:23:27). You should write a short paragraph (150-200 words) for each scene. You can do further research into “Jim Crow” laws if you need to. Be sure to use Chicago style footnotes for any outside sources you use and include a bibliography after your third paragraph.

This article by Andrew Gomez discusses Jim Crow laws and the Cuban communities in Florida. There is a section on Jim Crow on pages 28-34. You can find the article through the Douglas College Library

Part 2: Fashion in Live by Night

a) Describe and Analyze 1920s and 1930s fashions

On the surface, Live by Night looks like a stylish and well-researched film. For Part 2 of the assignment, you need to analyze three photos of the cast in period fashion or still scenes from the movie and describe in detail what clothing the cast members are wearing, consider brand names, style names, cuts, etc. Try to be as thorough as you can. Your three examples should be different from one another. Copy and paste each still scene or picture into your assignment and write your description in a paragraph beside or below the photo. To verify your photos or still scenes, you must show how it similar to a style depicted on the website ‘Fashion History’ https://fashionhistory.fitnyc.edu/1930-1939/ . You can search ‘Fashion History’ by the decade. To prove verification, quote text and/or include a photo to display side-by-side with your Live by Night photo. Remember to be thorough and provide a bibliography after each paragraph to indicate where you obtained your research. You don’t need to feel limited to the paragraph format. If you would like to use bubbles or a slide show, you can do so. Just don’t forget the bibliography!

Remember that the film spans over 15 years of history. You should notice changes in the fashions over the course of the film. There are a couple of websites listed below that will be of use. You can do additional research, too. Try some searches through the library website.

b) Fashion Response

Finally, write a response to the following question: Based on your research on fashion history in the 1920s and 1930s, how accurately did the film Live by Night represent clothing fashion from the 1920s and 1930s? Give at least two examples to back up your point. (200-300 words) Be sure to use Chicago style footnotes for any outside sources you use and include a bibliography after your response.
