Write your own Food Blog EntryLet’s put food in a context! Through this semester we are discussing aspects of food through assessing systems, scientific facts, history, and societal impact. This assignment will translate that into writing. Food writing is very popular today. Food writing evokes emotions, passion, and memories. What all food writing has in common is that it must stimulate the senses and make you hungry (maybe hungry literally or maybe hungry for more). This is a writing exercise, so you will start with an outline, called a scaffolding of your blog. Then use that to write a personal essay with a compelling opening to lead the first paragraph, add images or additional information. In the end your food blog should be 1-2 pages, but not longer. There are likely hundreds,or thousands of Food Blogs published online. There is even an article on “The 50 Best Food & Cooking Blogs” that is updated every 24 hours, according to the website https://detailed.com/food-blogs/. You may even have seen content on social media platforms that are food blogs in video form. Needless to say thatfood writing is a growing area of art and business. There is no wrong or bad topic, but if you are struggling think about designing a meal, your favorite recipe, Pandemic food culture, kitchen science, childhood food memories, food history. Develop Your Voice**This information is adapted from Will Write for Food by Dianne Jacob, 3rdedition•You need a conversational voice; this writing is less formal than a book or report. This writing is more personal than a newspaper article. The key is to make it memorable and uniquely yours.•Bring yourself into your food blog. Show your personality. Blog posts can be fun, intelligent, opinionated, and creative. They make you think and want to learn. •The actual subject matters less if you have a strong voice and strong opinions. Writing Your Post*•Design your scaffolding •Scaffolding is support system that is used before a building can be built or repaired. In this case your scaffolding is an outline that will support the writing of your blog entry.•Make a list of ten potential ideas for posts, maybe each one is just one sentence long. •Start a conversation: Bring up a topic, tell a story about it, and ask what others think. Hook onto the news of the day. Have an opinion about the latest survey on food, or on a winning chef contestant on television, or discuss a newspaper story.
•Make an argument: You believe donuts are unfairly maligned or cinnamon is the world’s most versatile spice. Speak your passion andprove an opinion. It is also effective to becontrarian sometimes, when everyone else is busy agreeing. •Tell a story: Did you talk with a memorable character at the farmer’s market? Did a pie become a colossal flop? Look for moments like these to take a larger point about your life, moments everyone can relate to when you think, “That’s what I would do” or “I’ve been there”. •Talk about a book, movie, or product: They don’t have to be new, perhaps you looked through a cookbook and became inspired to try a new recipe or you thought about a treasured item in your kitchen you can’t live without. Start with a compelling opening paragraph, called a lead:•Draw in readers by piquingtheir interest. •Put readers in the center of the story immediately, a particularly good technique for travel stories. •Make a promise to the reader. Try a sentence like “Here’s what I found out” tells readers you have something important and interesting to tell them. Once you have drawn the reader in, explain what you are going to tell them. Explain the point and tell the reader what they will learn through this blog. Want more ideas? Here are a few more.•Nonfiction-demystifying foods, food origins, travel•A food-based memoir (short autobiographical style), combine with stories, relationships, etc.•Food memories-reconstruct meals and dialogue from around the table, cooking events, and how you learned about food and food traditions. •Focus on the senses-Whether in the kitchen, dining room, garden, restaurant, market, cafeteria, picnic area, or in the woods, put the reader there with you, experiencing all the sensations•Recipes-Tell a narrative about the recipe, maybe even a a shopping trip.•Food History-Accuracy is paramount and truth is critical. Tell an edible story. •Cultural anthropology and Philosophy-focus on the social, symbolic, political, and economic roles of food and cultures. May require a bit of research. •Reference-Like a dictionary where you look up something to do with food. Tackle a narrow subject that serves as more of a guide. •Guidebook-A travelogue either local or abroad. Pack useful, practical information about an area. Maybe a vegetarian guide to Main Street, Newark, DE or a guide to the dining halls on campus
