Read all the responses in Class Conversation 4.1 and then respond to the following prompts. This will be the second part of your Research Project proposal.

This assignment is intended to help you push your research project in a productive direction. You should be making decisions and committing to a more specific path of research (i.e your responses here should show some further development since your responses to “Class Conversation 4.1”). However, nothing you write here should constrain your future choices too much, since you will necessarily have to adapt your project as you learn more through your research. That being said, it is very important to set certain limits to the questions you are asking in your project (i.e. its uniqueness) and to begin to recognize how those questions will work alongside the questions being asked by other students in the class (i.e. its relevance).

PLEASE NOTE: You are strongly encouraged to define your topic as narrowly as possible, since smaller more manageable sets of questions lead to higher quality research projects. An important part of academic writing is acknowledging your limits so that you can give adequate attention to the tasks you set out to accomplish.

  1. Briefly define the currently existing social problem you intend to research and write about. Your problem should be related to the ongoing class conversation and assigned readings and relevant to the research interests of other students in the class (as they have developed thus far). Your problem should also be easily distinguished from other projects in the class and intended to contribute something unique to the class conversation. Explain how your project will be both relevant and distinct.
  2. What are your leading questions? Explain how these questions have emerged out of the reading and writing you have done so far this quarter. Also explain why you believe these questions would be likely to lead to interesting and valuable knowledge for the class. How are they neither too narrow nor too broad?
  3. Give a brief historical narrative of the problem you will research, as much as you know so far. What are some important moments that will need to be included in any effective explanation of the causes and emergence of the problem?
  4. Who are some of the main actors (individual or collective) involved in the problem, as far as you know? Especially, identify anyone who has something to gain from the perpetuation of the problem as it is. Explain what stake they have in or what they stand to gain from the continuation of the status quo, as well as any ways that they actively invest in and reproduce the problematic situation.
  5. Discuss the keywords you have found the most useful in finding timely, appropriate, and authoritative sources.

NOTE: Writing you submit for these topic development posts can be used as draft portions of your CP, to be included with necessary revisions if and when it is appropriate to the development of the argument therein.
