Key Term and Why You Are Interested in It
After reviewing the first chapter of our textbook, I am drawn to the key term, globalization. I have always found the concept of globalization fascinating and it intrigues me that such a process was able to take place over hundreds of years. I am still in awe of how various cultures have blended and merged together because of how they integrated certain aspects from other cultures instead of remaining the same over the years. In my opinion, globalization captures the essence of international business as a whole and is the very reason that the global economy functions the way that it now does.
Explanation of the Key Term
Globalization is the growing integration of economies and societies worldwide, and it is recognized as being one of the most important topics in international business (Scatterlee, 2018, pg. 1). We are still seeing globalization now as businesses branch out and gain international influence and operate globally, in countries all across the world. Globalization is very important and has contributed to the development of producing products more effectively and efficiently. Because of globalization, businesses are able to find more cost effective ways to form products. Because of globalization, there is also greater competition on a global scale, that drives prices down for consumers around the world.
The article that I chose to discuss in this forum was a found on the Jerry Falwell Online Library and is called Globalization: France, Nazis and the Internet. This is a very interesting article that goes into detail about a court case where France was looking to sue Yahoo! because of their unwillingness to make certain auctions inaccessible in France that include Nazi memorabilia and other symbols of hate that are outlawed in the country. The article goes into detail about how there is no greater instrument of globalization than the internet, due to the fact that it has the ability to allow individuals from different parts of the world to communicate with each other in real time. It is very rare for larger, wealthier counties to oppose globalization. This is especially interesting for a country like France that has a legal drinking age of sixteen, nude beaches, and a tolerant atmosphere, France is hardly the kind of place one would expect to find a backlash against globalization (Denmark, 2016). It is important to note that Yahoo! is not a French company and the online auctions did not take place on French soil, which is why Yahoo! eventually gained U.S. court victory. Although Yahoo! won the case, it is interesting that due to different political and cultural views, certain content can be viewed in different lights across the world.
As explained in the selected article, globalization is still taking place today and is especially prevalent due to the internet, that allows for online shopping and auctioning, for customers to be able to purchase products online that may only be produced in certain parts of the world, thousands of miles away. In the context of international business, there may still be certain differences in cultures that make it difficult for products to be completed acceptable in all parts of the world. In fact, it can be viewed that globalization, competitiveness, and governability are not only disrupting business in the twenty-first century but also that there is a symbiotic relationship between these three forces, resulting in an impact on the economic and business environment far greater than the effects of any of these three individually (Ernst & Haar, 2019, pg. 19). In today’s world, globalization has the potential to cause certain conflicts between governments that may not completely see eye to eye on particular topics. Globalization has clearly evolved over the years, as technology advances. The internet is now a major tool in globalization. In fact, the ongoing global spread of culture and ideas on the Internet is expected to promote economic opportunity, human flourishing, and the ongoing decentralization of innovation and information production (DeNardis, 2009, pg. 1). The selected article shared the common theme of all other articles considered that the internet is having a large impact on globalization and how cultures continue to merge and integrate with each other through products sold online to customers across the world.
