I’m trying to learn for my Communications class and I’m stuck. Can you help?
At some point in our lives, we may be asked to speak at an event or gathering. Some common occasions are weddings and funerals, but it is easy to imagine similar events like award ceremonies, graduation, family reunions, and dinner toasts. For this speech, you will choose the occasion and deliver a speech appropriate to that situation.Be creative with your occasion and what you decide to present.Have fun with this assignment; it is meant to be a fun way to end the semester.
It should be a 3 minute speech, and it is worth 50 points. You should have an introduction, main points, and a conclusion. You may use a prop (a flower or a glass to “raise a toast”), but it is not required. There is not enough time to use the computer for your presentation aid, so I would avoid those types of presentation aids.I am expecting you to dress professionally; however, you may wear an outfit that matches your speech. You will be allowed to use 1 note card (3×5, front only).I will grade the format of your speech (introduction, main points, conclusion), and I will grade your content (original attention gainer, main points are clear, shows creativity, etc.).Finally, I will grade your delivery and how you present your information (eye contact, use of voice, gestures). Research and sources are NOT required for this speech, but you may use research, a quotation, or other’s ideas in your speech (just be sure to give that person credit). You could start with a famous quote or tell a story that you learned while doing research.
While the occasion will usually determine the purpose of your speech, you are free to choose any occasion that corresponds with one of the following purposes: 1) to commemorate, celebrate, toast or pay tribute (to a person, couple, group of people, organization, or holiday); 2) to eulogize or memorialize (for someone who has passed away—it could be someone you knew or someone you did not know but would still like to eulogize); 3) to entertain (usually a light-hearted or humorous speech delivered after dinner or at a celebration). When considering at which occasion you imagine yourself giving this speech, also imagine the audience to whom you are speaking. While your speech should contain all the elements of a speech you have learned to this point (an introduction, body, and conclusion), the occasion and audience should determine your language choice, tone and style of delivery, evidence or research used, and humor (if any).
Some tips to consider:
• Be appropriate.
• Have a clear organization, please do not ramble on.
• Know how to end a speech of this nature. Many speeches end awkwardly due to this fact.
• Pick a topic and occasion that you are comfortable speaking about/on.
• Simplify the Introduction: Attention Gainer and Thesis Statement.
• Simplify the Conclusion: Review Thesis Statement and provide a Reason to Remember.
• A few topics that have been presented in the past: toasts at weddings, funerals/celebration of life, family member’s birthday party; it could be a speech for graduation, Oscar Award, Grammy, or signing day.
• Try to build rapport or a connection with your audience.
• You want your audience to be touched or to feel how you feel about your topic.
• Have fun!!Be Creative!!End the Semester with a Bang!!
