Physical Inactivity Rates [WLOs: 1, 2] [CLOs: 2, 4]<

After reading the required resources for this week, let’s shift our attention to physical inactivity rates. As you will discover, a large number of Americans is physically inactive. Let’s take a look at global, national, state, county, and individual inactivity rates, as well as some potential health consequences of a sedentary lifestyle.

Global and National:

Assess the physical inactivity data on the World Health Organization (WHO) website including the Insufficient Physical Activity (choose “Adults, both sexes” via the “View more Indicators” tab on the top left) interactive map and the Prevalence of Insufficient Physical Activity Among Adults Data by Country dataset.

  • Which countries have problems with physical inactivity? Please name five.
  • How does the U.S. rank in terms of its physical inactivity?

State:

Examine the Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity: Data, Trends and Maps (choose your state, and select “Physical Activity” for category, and “Physical Activity Behavior” for Topic, as well as the most current year of available data).

  • List the percentage of adults who do not engage in leisure time physical activity in your state.
  • How does the CDC determine whether an adult is physically inactive or not (see Footnotes)?

County:

Evaluate your specific county’s physical activity rate via the County Health Rankings link (choose your state, then click on your county via the “Overall Rankings in Health Factors” map. Physical inactivity data can be found under the “Health Behaviors” data.

  • Compare and contrast the county data to the rest of the state and to the nation.

Individual:

Describe your personal contribution to the physical inactivity prevalence rate for your county. Is your physical inactivity level below, at, or above the currently listed rate?

Health Consequences:

Assess two potential health consequences of physical inactivity or sedentary behaviors. Support your assessment with at least one scholarly source.

Your initial post must be a minimum of 250 words in length and supported with at least one scholarly source. Ensure all sources used for your posting are properly cited and referenced, according to APA formatting guidelines.

Guided Response: Review several of your classmates’ posts and respond to at least two of your peers in at least 100 words. Was your peer’s research different from your own findings? What do you think contributes to the variances (or similarities) between your data and your peer’s data?

The answer you send me should be like the students answers setup the same way

Global and National:

  • Which countries have problems with physical inactivity? Please name five.
  • Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Germany, Italy and Brazil
  • How does the U.S. rank in terms of its physical inactivity?
  • The United States ranks at about 40% of insufficient physical activity (World Health Organization, n.d.). It definitely is not the worst based on the information provided from this website, but we definitely are not the lowest ranking country.

State:

  • List the percentage of adults who do not engage in leisure time physical activity in your state.
  • In 2018, at least 17.6% of adults over the age of 18 did not engage in a leisure time physical activity in the state of Washington (Centers for Disease, n.d.)
  • How does the CDC determine whether an adult is physically inactive or not (see Footnotes)?
  • The CDC determines if you are physically inactive if the participate answered “no” on the question: “During the past month, other than your regular job, did you participate in any physical activities or exercises such as running, calisthenics, golf, gardening, or walking for exercise” (Centers for disease, n.d.).

County:

  • Compare and contrast the county data to the rest of the state and to the nation.
  • In 2016, Spokane county had a physical inactivity rate of 18% and the state of Washington was at 17% physical inactivity, while the United States was at 23% physical inactivity (University of Wisconsin, 2019). So, while Spokane county was not worse than the country, the percentage of physical inactivity was higher in the county than in was for the state of Washington. I am sure these ratings have definitely changed, as the countries physical inactivity rate has almost double from 2016 to 2018.

Individual:

I would say that my physical activity rate is above Spokane counties rate, because I not only have to lift heavy things for work almost every day. I have been working on becoming more physical activity by going to the gym 5 times a week for the past month.

Health Consequences:

Having a physically inactive lifestyle can lead to obesity which can lead to other chronic diseases like cancer. Higher BMI and increases in BMI over the course of life are associated with a higher risk of cancer (Hruby et al., 2016). Women are at risk of gaining weight if they continue living a lifestyle of low physical inactivity. A study was done on hormone therapy in obese women and postmenopausal breast cancer. Women who were obese and never used hormone therapy had a 59% higher risk of postmenopausal cancer than those of their slim counterparts (Hruby et al., 2016).

Hi class,

  • Which countries have problems with physical inactivity? Please name five.

Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Brazil, and Costa Rica.

  • How does the U.S. rank in terms of its physical inactivity?

The U.S. ranks at 40% on the insufficient physical activity for both sexes.

  • List the percentage of adults who do not engage in leisure time physical activity in your state.

The percentage of adults who do not engage in leisure time physical activity in my state is 26.2%.

  • How does the CDC determine whether an adult is physically inactive or not (see Footnotes)?

Respondents were classified as participating in no leisure-time physical activity if they responded “no” to the following question: “During the past month, other than your regular job, did you participate in any physical activities or exercises such as running, calisthenics, golf, gardening, or walking for exercise?”

  • Compare and contrast the county data to the rest of the state and to the nation.

Henry County was rated number 38. In 2016, Henry county was rated at 27% on physically inactive and the state altogether was rated at 28% physically inactive.

Describe your personal contribution to the physical inactivity prevalence rate for your county. Is your physical inactivity level below, at, or above the currently listed rate?

I believe in 2016, I was probably above the current listed rate due to being in the military and we always have to be physically fit in order to maintain our job. As a law enforcer, I have to be able to perform task and be fit to do my job.

Assess two potential health consequences of physical inactivity or sedentary behaviors. Support your assessment with at least one scholarly source.

Without regular physical activity, our bodies can lose strength and the ability to function properly. Another consequence would be that we could gain weight and that is not good for our organs such as our heart. It could also lead to depression and anxiety which could also negatively affect our brain.
