I need an explanation for this Art question to help me study.
Choose one of the case studies at the bottom of this page.
Then create a post in the forum that is set up like a Wikipedia page. The entire project should be between 600-800 words total.
Sections headers to use in your post:
INTRODUCTION- Provide a concise one-paragraph background of the details of the case
ISSUE INVOLVED – Give a brief statement of what exactly is at issue – beyond what happened, what is the controversy and the reason for the clash of ideas?
STAKEHOLDERS – Describe the various parties involved and explain their interest in the case
TYPE(s) OF CENSORSHIP – Analyze what type of censorship was in play: Structural, Regulative, Self (see Background information on Censorship below on this assignment)
There is absolutely no fancy formatting needed, do not waste energy on matters of design. Simply fill in the sections listed above based on your reading/viewing about the case study you choose. For formatting think of a standard but far simpler Wikipedia page.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON CENSORSHIP
Simply stated, artistic censorship is the supervision by one individual or group over the expression of another.
Types of Censorship in play in this assignment:
Structural Censorship – ideology of the dominant structure restricts access
Here is a common example: Bamiyan Buddhas were built in the sixth century and represented the classic blended style of Gandharan Buddhist Art. This was not valued by the Taliban who were offended by their status as idols and dynamited and destroyed the pair of sculptures in 2001.
Regulative Censorship – restricting the expression of another
Here is an example: During the 1989 protests in Beijing, Chinese troops destroyed a statue created by the protesters called the Goddess of Democracy in Tiananmen Square. The government continues to censor information about those events.
Self-Censorship – avoiding problematic material usually related to issues of structural censorship Artists working under Josef Stalin in Russia were required to only produce paintings in his preferred social realist style or they were not allowed to work as artists. Those who did not conform were jailed or exiled. In another example regarding the marketplace, the Rolling Stones performed a version of their hit song “Let’s Spend the Night Together” on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1967 and were told to change the lyrics to a more socially acceptable “Let’s Spend Some Time Together.” The chose to change the lyrics rather than give up the opportunity to perform.
