Need help with my Psychology question – I’m studying for my class.
As we move into Week 2 and begin to dig deeper into cognition and learning, we see there are many important topics to discuss this week and in the weeks to follow! An intriguing topic that affects us all is that of memory. Working memory, which is often conflated with short-term memory (STM) is the topic of our discussion this week. Our course materials inform us of the limited capacity of the working memory and the need to essentially flip the data processed in immediately, transferring it into a meaningful information we can use to address the issues presented.
Let’s take a moment to review a great Ted Talks video with speaker Peter Doolittle (2013), who discusses the concept of working memory and how it influences our day to day activities.
The Working Memory tests provide us with an excellent opportunity to test our working memory capacity!

Good morning all,
In response to week two’s forum. . . I visited the Memory Health Check website, provided through the writing prompt. The iteration of the working memory test I visited was the, Free Digit Span Memory Test. What immediately caught my interest, was the background on how the test was a popular tool used by many research labs for cognitive and neuroscience studies. As I took the test, I transitioned from slow to fast. . .increasing the amount of numbers I could remember. I am not sure how everyone else did, but I capped out at seven numbers on fast. I have been up for about nineteen hours and I would imagine this played a role in my recollection abilities. The next test I took, was the Free Spatial Memory Test. During this test, I struggled to truly understand the intent and purpose of this particular exercise and felt it was the least effective. The next test I took was the Free Short Term Memory test challenge and my results were 76% correct recall, at 1240ms Avg response time. I enjoyed how this quiz took me away from me element and brought a small mental challenge. The next evaluation I visited was the Healthy Brain Test & Assessment. I was not surprise to learn, from this assessment, that I was doing a job that would slightly alter my healthy brain tests results. My physical health and social-emotional health were good, but my “habits & Lifestyle” was slightly low. I would imagine, the lack of sleep and increase of exercise. . .is not the healthiest for my body. The last test I did, was the Brain Processing Speed Test, in which I got a 50%. This test was a “short term” memory assessment, but provided a different lens in reference to my memory capacity. As mentioned in the recommended TED Talk this week, “People with high working memory capacity tend to be good storytellers. . .tend to solve and do well on standardized tests. . . have high levels of writing ability.” This was interesting to learn, because, I felt like this is how my memory capacity performs. Overall, doing these different exercises taught me how our working memory plays a huge role in our day to day activities. As Peter Doolittle said, “working memory is that part of our consciousness that we are aware of at any given time of day.”

For this week’s discussion, we took the memory test. I took the test the five times and these are my results, Test one was on beginner nature pictures, and I scored 72%. Test two was fast nature picture and the score was 80%. Test three was beginner animal pictures and I scored 84%, and the next test was fast animal pictures was a 92%. I then took the fractal images on beginner and scored a 60%.
For the first test, I was a little nervous, and scored an average score. I then took the test again which seemed to be a little harder dude to the fact I had seen all of the picture and had a hard time remember if I had seen them for the first time on this test or if I was remembering from the first test. Although I was a little confused, the pictures flashing, faster helped me out some and I scored a 80% improving my score. The next test was on animals which I feel helped me do better on the test in general, and is the test I scored the highest on. It was easy to recall the images because I was able to put a name to the Images, and was even easier the second time around with the images flashing faster. The last test was the most difficult for me, due to the fact I didn’t really understand what I was looking at. I only took that test one time and scored really bad on it.
My take away from the is it seems our working memory works better with things we understand or have some type of stored memory of. I really struggled keeping up with the items I did not know. This is a tool I can use with study for school. The more you know and understand things the easier it will be to remember them in the end. – Nathaniel
Hi class, hope all is well and your having a great semester. To begin with, I started off with the memory test. It included pictures of animals, nature, and fractal. First, I chose animal photos and I receive the results of 93% correct with a 922 milliseconds (ms) response time. Next, I chose nature which resulted in 98% correct and an 890ms response time. Lastly, I chose the fractal which resulted in 88% correct at 854ms response time. This test was actually the easiest test to do to me. We were told to this several times and I noticed an increase in skill.
Next, I did the digital span memory test. This was the hardest test for me. I got bad memory. I was only able to complete 2-3 numbers on this test. I couldn’t concentrate on this test, something kept throwing me off.
Last but not least, I did the butterfly test. I made it to 18 which meant very good results.
I believe doing this test made me open my eyes to how much I can pick my brain. It was some test that I could do and remember and some test throw me off and had me second guessing if I really had seen that picture. The memory test with the animals was my favorite test honestly. Not only cause I love animals but the layout of compliance with my way of thinking. I can’t wait to read about everybody else results, hopefully everybody memories is way better than mine. -Patricia
